July on the Farm: Live Life Like Someone Left the Gate Open

A few weeks ago, a group of guests asked me about our farm slogan, “Live life like someone left the gate open.” It sparked a conversation that made me stop and think.

I’ve always looked at that saying from the perspective of the animals. When a gate gets left open, the donkey’s don’t stand there wondering if they should go. They run and – boy do they run. They kick-up their hooves, put their ears back and run like crazy. They enjoy the freedom of being outside their everyday boundaries and I think they like to be chased! (right Kelly?)

To me, it’s a reminder not to hold back. Be curious. Try new things. Say yes to adventures. Live with joy.

But one of our guests shared a different interpretation that I instantly loved.

What if the open gate isn’t about getting out? What if it’s about letting people in?

That idea feels just as true to who we are.

When Brad and I were first married, and later when we had kids, our house was always full. We were constantly inviting people over because we truly believed the more, the merrier. Our kids grew up surrounded by big gatherings, making new friends, trying new foods, and learning that the best memories are often made around a table filled with friends and family.

That same spirit has naturally carried over to the farm.

Whether it’s a Thursday or Saturday pizza night with 300 new friends, a wedding, a family reunion, a workshop, or even a celebration of life, opening the gate means opening our home and our hearts.

Hospitality isn’t just serving pizza. It’s creating a place where people feel welcome, where conversations happen, memories are made, and strangers often leave as friends.

I don’t think either meaning is wrong. In fact, maybe the best life is lived doing both. Chase the adventures waiting outside the gate, and when you come home, leave the gate open for someone else.

That message feels especially fitting as we host The Crowded Table on July 22. The evening is built around the simple idea that some of life’s best conversations happen when we gather around a table, share a meal, and make room for someone new. We would love for you to pull up a chair and join us.
